Ministry has proposed NEXT as a centralised examination and discard NEET-PG

Every year 1.5 lakh students appear for NEET-PG entrance exams for admission to around 50,000 PG Medical seats in India.

In a welcome move by Union Health Ministry to relieve medical students wanting to pursue post-graduate courses the Ministry has proposed NEXT as a centralised examination and discard NEET-PG.

“According to the amendments proposed in NMC Bill, entry into the PG programs will be on the basis of the results of the National Exit Test (NEXT), which would be held as a common final MBBS examination exam across the country. So, the candidates would not have to appear in a separate exam after clearing the MBBS final exam for admission to PG courses.

The final MBBS examination i.e. NEXT results would be prerequisite for admission to MD and MS programs and the students would also not be required to appear in a separate exam after MBBS to obtain a license to practice.

The NMC Bill was introduced in Parliament in December 2017, but it lapsed with the dissolution of the 16th Lok Sabha. The Bill proposed a national-level licence exam for all MBBS graduates India and Abroad for getting licence to practice in India and  provision of a ‘bridge course’ to allow practitioners of AYUSH courses to pursue allopath to address the “acute shortage” of doctors in the country. But it was removed due to strong protests by several doctor bodies.

The new amendment has been incorporated in the revised draft National Medical Commission (NMC) Bill which would be sent to the Cabinet soon, according to official sources.

However, for admission to PG courses at AIIMS, clearing a separate exam will remain mandatory. Also, the NEET Super Specialty, which is a national-level entrance exam for admission in DM/MCh courses, will continue, sources said.

This will regulate NEXT as a centralised examination that will regulate as MBBS UG level Exit examination and PG level medical courses entrance examination as well.

BANGLADESH

BANGLADESH

Bangladesh is south Asia’s greenest jewel – a country braided with rivers, with a rich culture waiting to be explored. Bangladesh is bordered by the Indian states of West Bengal to the west and north, Assam to the north, Meghalaya to the north and northeast, and Tripura and Mizoram to the east. To the southeast, it shares a boundary with Myanmar (Burma). The southern part of Bangladesh opens into the Bay of Bengal.

Dhaka is now one of the most densely industrialized regions in the country. By the 21st century, it emerged as a mega city, which is now listed as a beta-global city by the Globalization and World Cities Research Network (GaWC). Since its establishment as a modern capital city, the population, area, and social and economic diversity of Dhaka have grown tremendously.

Some of the popular tourist destinations to explore in Bangladesh are the Sundarbans (the largest mangrove forest in the world), Cox Bazar (a tourist spot along the longest uninterrupted sea beach in the world), Saint Martin’s Island (a picturesque coral island offshore in the Bay of Bengal), the Sylhet tea gardens, Chittagong Hill Tracts, Sonargaon (ruins of the ancient capital of Bengal), Paharpur (a 7th century 27 acres Buddhist monastery complex with a museum), Mahastangarh (an 8th century 5 miles radius archaeological site with a museum), Mainamati (a vast archaeological site consisting of stupas, temples, courtyards and a museum), etc.

The people of Bangladesh are super friendly and they always went out of their way to help. Bangladesh is amongst the cheapest countries in Asia and the world.  Yes, even cheaper than India, Vietnam, and the Philippines.

Bangladesh is really a unique country with a lot to offer if you go in with an open mind and be prepared to experience something brand new.

TRAVELLING TO BANGLADESH FROM INDIA

BY FLIGHT

There are three International Airports in Bangladesh:

  1. Dhaka Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport (DAC)
  2. Chittagong Shah Amanat International Airport (CGP)
  3. SylhetOsmani International Airport (ZYL)

It takes about 30 minutes to reach the center of Dhaka, but may take longer in traffic.

It is also possible to use Chittagong Amanat International Airport for India and Thailand.

If you fly to Dhaka Airport from India you can get Bangladesh visas in Kolkata and Agartala (Akhaura), as well as in New Delhi.

Domestic carriers

Biman is the national carrier of Bangladesh. It’s a scruffy and curiously disorganized operation, but the fleet is fairly well maintained and the airline has a good safety record.

Domestic routes connect Dhaka to Chittagong, Sylhet and Jessore on a daily basis. Barisal, Rajshahi and Saidpur (in Rangpur) are also connected by twice- or thrice-weekly flights.

Departure Tax

The departure tax for leaving Bangladesh by air is included in the price of air tickets.

BY ROAD

Bangladesh shares several border check posts with its neighbor India, and many of these allow civilian transit between the two nations.

Crossings such as Benapole, Tamabil and Akhaura remain popular with tourists, and have fairly good road transport networks on both sides.

BY TRAIN

There is a twice-weekly train that connects Kolkata with Dhaka which is comfortable and hassle-free.

Apart from immigration formalities at the border, it’s direct and nonstop.

GETTING AROUND BANGLADESH

Travelling around Bangladesh is extremely cheap, although in some cases it can be quite uncomfortable.

Buses are really cheap mode of transport but are generally crowded. If you want a more comfortable and convenient transport you can opt for a little expensive Coaches for getting around.

Trains are a safer option than road travel, although the network and tickets are limited.

Rickshaws (cycle-rickshaws) or CNGs (auto-rickshaws) are best ways to commute between sights in cities and between villages.

Boat In Barisal and Khulna divisions, the riverboat is the king of travel. Joining locals on a long ferry ride is one of the undisputed highlights of Bangladesh trip.

Plane Domestic flights to divisional towns from Dhaka are worth considering if your time is limited.

FOOD IN BANGLADESH

Bangladesh has an enormous variety of food catering to all budgets. Bangladeshi food is similar to Indian food, lots of curry based dishes, soups, vegetables, roti and chai.

Although contrary to in India, Bangladeshis eat a lot of meat (mutton, chicken, and beef). Many popular fast food chains from U.S. such as KFC and Burger King can also be spotted readily. Bangladesh-Chinese fusion restaurants serving fantastic cuisines can be tried by food lovers.

For vegetarians, and especially Hindus, beef-free restaurants can be a bit difficult to find, but there are few Indian restaurants where one can get vegetarian food in a beef-free environment.

Local sweets like rasogollah and golap jam/pantuya/ledikeni are excellent desserts to try.

LANGUAGE IN BANGLADESH

The majority of young people can speak or understand English. This breaks down cultural barriers and makes it easier to make friends and do daily activities like ordering in a restaurant or riding in a taxi. Most of the people also speak Bengali to communicate.

CURRENCY IN BANGLADESH

The local currency of Bangladesh is the Taka (Tk), which is (notionally) further divided into 100 paisas. The largest note is Tk 1000. The smallest coin is Tk 1.

The most reliable ATMs are AB Bank, Dutch Bangla Bank, Brac Bank, Standard Chartered Bank and HSBC, all of which have branches in Dhaka, Chittagong and Sylhet.

You will find official money changers upon arriving at Dhaka airport. Most top-end hotels as well as banks in big cities will also change foreign currency for a small surcharge.

PHILIPPINES

ABOUT

Philippines officially known as the Republic of the Philippines is an archipelago country in Southeast Asia. Situated in the western Pacific Ocean, it consists of about 7,641 islands that are categorized broadly under three main geographical divisions from north to south: Luzon, Visayas, and Mindanao. The capital city of the Philippines is Manila and the most populous city is Quezon City, both part of Metro Manila.

The highest mountain is Mount Apo and is located on the island of Mindanao. The Galathea Depth in the Philippine Trench is the deepest point in the country and the third deepest in the world. The trench is located in the Philippine Sea. The Philippines’ rain forests and its extensive coastlines make it home to a diverse range of birds, plants, animals, and sea creatures.

The Philippines is a founding member of the United Nations, World Trade Organization, Association of Southeast Asian Nations, the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation forum, and the East Asia Summit. It also hosts the headquarters of the Asian Development Bank. The Philippines is considered to be an emerging market and a newly industrialized country.

HOW TO REACH PHILIPPINES

BY FLIGHT: There are five International Airports served in Philippines:

Ninoy Aquino International Airport: The busiest international airport in the country and the one you’re most likely to fly into and out of. The air-traffic experienced here is heavy and navigating through the intricate network might prove to be difficult for first time.

Mactan-Cebu International Airport: Cebu’s airport is second only to Manila in terms of air traffic, but way ahead in terms of user-friendliness. Note that the airport is actually on Mactan Island, 15km east of Cebu City.

Clark International Airport: Near Angeles, a two-hour bus ride north of Metro Manila. It’s traditionally a hub for low-cost airlines but an increasing number of legacy Asian and Middle Eastern carriers are flying here. Airlines serving Clark with international flights include Cebu Pacific, Tigerair, Air Asia and Qatar Airways.

Davao International Airport:For now, only SilkAir has flights to Singapore; routes to Malaysia might begin operating.

Kalibo International Airport: Useful direct flights to Kalibo, near Boracay, from Beijing, Kunming, Hong Kong, Seoul, Shanghai, Singapore and other Asian hubs.

NOTE: Pay close attention to which terminal your airline uses and spare plenty of time between connecting flights if you have to switch terminals.

DOMESTIC AIRLINES:

Besides the international airlines available on any internet flight search, the following regional budget and Philippine carriers are worth checking out for flights into and out of the country:

  • AirAsia
  • Cebu Pacific
  • Jetstar
  • Philippine Airlines
  • Tigerair

Departure Tax:

No departure tax on international departures (the P750 fee is included in your ticket).

CLIMATE

The climate is tropical, with March to May (summer) being the hottest months. The rainy season starts in June and extends through October. The coolest months are from November to February, with mid-January to end of February considered the best for cooler and dryer weather. Locations exposed directly to the Pacific Ocean have frequent rainfall all year. The average temperatures range from 78°F / 25°C to 90°F / 32°C, and humidity is around 77 percent.

FOOD

Filipino cuisine has developed from the different cultures that shaped its history. It is a melange of Indian, Chinese, Malay, Spanish, European and American influences. America’s influence is palpable in the Philippines, and you’ll be hard pressed to find a mall without the requisite McDonald, KFC, Pizza Hut, and even Taco Bell.

Hindus will find Indian restaurants which serve some vegetarian options around Metro Manila. Vegetarians and vegans will find it difficult to find a Filipino dish which is wholly vegetarian as most of the Filipinos love to add meat in every single dish they eat.

CURRENCY

The Philippine PESO symbolized locally and throughout Philippines guides as ₱ and internationally as PHP is the official currency. The only other currency that would be recognized in rare cases would be the US dollar, which is used in duty free outlets, internet transactions and overseas travel products sold in the Philippines.

Banks are widely available to exchange currency but usually impose a minimum amount and have limited hours of operation, except Bank of the Philippine Islands (BPI) and Banco De Oro (BDO) which have longer hours of operation.

Don’t exchange money in stalls along the streets as some of them might be exchanging your money for counterfeit money.

Money changers also exist at department stores, supermarkets and hotels but the rates offered are highly unfavorable to the customers.

Do not accept ANY of the older version (pre-December 2010) banknotes. They are now worthless.

LANGUAGE

English is an official language of the Philippines along with Filipino and is a compulsory subject in all schools, so it is widely spoken in the larger cities and main tourist areas. Many signs are printed in English and there are even local English TV channels. Almost all broadsheet newspapers use English as well. Tourists won’t have any problems using English when making inquiries at commercial and government establishments.

Indian languages such as Hindi and Punjabi are also spoken by the Indian communities residing here while Europeans speak their own languages.

RELIGION

The Philippines is not only the largest Christian country in Asia, but also it is the world’s third largest Catholic Nation. The Catholic faith remains the single biggest legacy of three hundred years of Spanish colonial rule. Indian Filipinos, Chinese Filipinos, and Japanese Filipinos are mostly Hindu, Sikh, Buddhist, Shinto, and Taoist which all account 3% of the population of the Philippines.
