HOW TO CLEAR MCI SCREENING TEST IN YOUR FIRST ATTEMPT

The exam of FMGE is given by those candidates who have completed their MBBS abroad and want to practise in India as a qualified Medical practitioner. The FMG Examination also known widely as the MCI Screening Test is conducted by the National Board of Examination twice a year in June and then in December.

Once you clear this exam, you will be equivalent to the candidates who have completed their MBBS from India and will be able to obtain a provisional or permanent registration certificate from Medical Council of India (MCI) or any State Medical Council (SMC).

For clearing the FMGE a candidate only needs to correctly answer 150 out of 300 questions and you can be a certified doctor. This is not too hard to attain if you think about it positively if you are able to apply only half the amount of knowledge gained during your MBBS abroad you are good to go.

Focus on the entire syllabus:

In your FMGE preparation, each subject is important do not prepare for particular subjects only rather try to have a strong command over at least 13 subjects out of 19. You should remember shortcuts can never lead you to success.

Prepare reference notes:

Whenever you study any topic keep on taking notes and jotting down crucial notes in key format. These keynotes will speed up your future revision process and you can also keep them handy as required. These small notes and references will facilitate your learning experience and retention.

Follow an effective timetable:

Before starting your preparation evaluate the syllabus and the duration of time available for preparation. Then according to your strong and weak subjects divide the preparation time for the entire syllabus so that all the topics can be covered. Make sure to allow time for daily revisions.

Revise Consistently:

Revise the topics frequently to ensure you are able to retain the preparation and apply them with confidence on the day of the exam. Make sure to include time for daily revision of important topics in your study plan. You should be able to revise the complete FMGE syllabus at least thrice before the exam.

Know your grasp on the topics:

Know your strong and weak subjects and work on them accordingly. Give ample amount to your weaker areas but make sure you complete your strong topics first so that they don’t get left out. If you leave any topic, it will impact your overall performance. In the MCI screening test, every mark counts to bring you closer to become a qualified doctor in India.

Take Mock Tests:

Take regular mock tests to evaluate your preparation. You can also join an online mock test series while you are studying MBBS abroad. When you take mock tests you are in an exam like situation and you have to implement your knowledge in the given time. This helps you identify your weaker areas and the improvement you need. It provides real-time feedback to help you improve.

Attempt MCQs for each subject:

In an MCI/FMGE screening test high speed, information retention capability, memorising efficiency, implementation of knowledge effectively play a pertinent role in achieving success. Constant practice of MCQs on various topics keeps you updated with the current pattern of the exam. It also helps you identify your strengths and weaknesses and improve your accuracy and speed by consistent practice. The more you practice better are your chances of scoring higher marks in the examination.

Stick to reliable and consistent resources:

With numerous resources available to prepare for MCI screening test the students generally get confused and overwhelmed while selecting the right study materials for them. One should not get lured into using too many resources or hopping from one book to another. Rather one should take time to choose wisely good quality resources for the subjects and stick to them during the preparation. Changing your resources or study materials frequently adds on to the confusion and also pushes behind your study time schedule.

The MCI screening test is conducted to keep a check on basic concepts, common sense, application of concepts, and ability to check the time management. This exam is not about each and every detail of the study curriculum of MBBS. The test is taken just to evaluate your familiarity with the concepts. If possible start a basic preparation for MCI Screening Test while you are studying MBBS abroad so that you can simultaneously evaluate your knowledge of the topics while you are studying those subjects in MBBS itself. This will definitely help you clear your MCI screening test in the first attempt. Stay optimistic and don’t shy away from working hard and you will definitely achieve success in all your endeavours.

USMLE Step 1 Exam for Foreign Students

United States Medical Licensure Exam (USMLE) is a licensing examination required to practice, do residency and fellowships in the USA. It is divided into three steps and here we will discuss the USMLE Step 1. The USMLE Step 1 is a standardized test that assesses a medical student’s ability to apply basic science fundamentals to the practice of medicine. The test is administered jointly by the National Board of Medical Examiners (NBME) and the Federation of State Medical Boards (FSMB).

When to take USMLE Step 1 Exam

Students take USMLE Step 1 following their second year of medical school but as a foreign medical graduate, your application process for a U.S. medical residency differs slightly from that of a student who completed their education in the United States. Most importantly, before you can apply for a residency in the US, you must get certification from the Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates (ECFMG).

Although you do not need to pass the USMLE Step 1 before taking the USMLE Step 2, you must achieve a passing score on both exams before you become eligible to take the USMLE Step 3. Also, you must pass USMLE Step 1 Step 2, AND Step 3 before your ECFMG certification becomes official.

USMLE Step 1 Application Process

The first step of the ECFMG certification process is filling out an application. Any foreign medical student or graduate can apply, as long as you have earned (or are in the process of earning) a medical degree from a school that is listed in the World Directory of Medical Schools. To start the process, you will need to go to the ECFMG website and request an identification number. From there, you can log in and start filling out the application.

USMLE Step 1 Educational Requirements

You need to have completed at least four years of medical study at one of the medical schools that are listed in the World Directory of Medical Schools, and you need to provide documentation that you have completed all of the necessary credits for graduation. It is important to note that you can apply for ECFMG certification while you are still finishing your degree, but you will not be awarded a certificate until you have received your medical diploma and submitted your final transcripts.

USMLE Step 1 Format

The USMLE Step 1 is a one-day examination, with a total of eight hours. It is divided into 7 blocks, each of which is 60 minutes long. Test takers are allowed 45 total minutes during the test for personal breaks. If you finish any section before the allotted hour is up, you can add that time to your personal break total. Six breaks total are allowed. There is no set number of questions on each block of the test but the USMLE guarantees that there will be no more than 40 questions per block and no more than 280 questions on the exam as a whole.

All of the questions on the USMLE Step 1 are single-item multiple-choice questions. From these options, you must choose the best answer. Only one answer is correct.

USMLE Step 1 Syllabus

USMLE Step 1 covers the basics of medical science. In general, you will be tested on the information that you would learn in the first two years of medical school in the United States. During these years, the training for U.S. medical students consists primarily of didactic coursework and laboratory exercises (as opposed to clinical training).

However, you should be aware that in some countries, the medical training does not align with that of the United States — in terms of timing and/or content — so you need to tailor your study efforts specifically for the USMLE, not necessarily reviewing everything you learned in medical school.

The questions on the USMLE are created by examination committees made up of medical experts from institutions in only two countries: the United States and Canada. These experts include medical school faculty members, teachers, research investigators, and clinicians who come together to decide what it is important for future U.S. medical residents to know about basic medical science.

In general, the USMLE Step 1 covers the broad principles of basic science and the functioning of human organs and organ systems. It includes questions within 8 traditionally defined disciplines and 5 interdisciplinary areas.

The traditionally defined disciplines are:

  • Anatomy
  • Behavioral Sciences
  • Biochemistry
  • Biostatistics and Epidemiology
  • Microbiology
  • Pathology
  • Pharmacology
  • Physiology

The interdisciplinary areas are:

  • Ageing
  • Genetics
  • Immunology
  • Molecular and Cellular biology
  • Nutritional sciences

Along with the ability to know all the information on these subjects you also need to be able to read and interpret relevant graphs and tables, identify pathologic and normal specimens (including both microscopic and pathologic specimens), apply your knowledge to specific clinical problem-solving questions for the USMLE Step 1 Exam.

There is also heavy emphasis on how these topics apply to organ systems. These types of questions normally make up between 60 and 70% of the total content of the test.

Organ systems are covered on the USMLE Step 1 are:

  • Blood and Lymphoreticular System
  • Behavioral Health
  • Cardiovascular System
  • Endocrine System
  • Gastrointestinal System
  • Nervous System and Special Senses
  • Renal and Urinary System
  • Reproductive System (Male and Female)
  • Respiratory System
  • Skin and Subcutaneous Tissue
  • Musculoskeletal System

Eligibility Criteria for PG Medical at Institute of Medicine Nepal

Do not take admission at any Medical University before knowing this

As we keep growing at a rapid pace, diversity and exploration are the key agendas towards growth. Medical aspirants are expected to be dedicated and focused. A notable amount of effort and personal sacrifice is associated with the profession. If you are not motivated enough for the career path the sacrifice won’t deem worth the rewards.

To be able to get admitted at a noteworthy Medical institution is a highly competitive feat. The acceptance rate at government medical colleges is limited as the number of seats is regrettably very limited. The fees at private medical institutions is equally deferring for students with limited budget.

Certainly, it is the foremost objective of any Indian medical aspirant to secure a seat at an Indian medical institution, but one must also do an equally important individual research about the private medical college they are able to secure admission at.

If due to any unfortunate reason candidates are unable to score well for a government college they don’t need to panic or succumb to get admission at any private college they can get their hands on. Instead they should explore the possibilities and opportunities available.

There are various medical institutions across the country. One should always verify few of the necessary requisite before taking any decision. The college establishment, number of years the college has been running, approval by the MCI, facilities provided for clinical exposure, if they have any affiliated hospital then the daily patient inflow, laboratories, facilities, etc.

An amalgamation of excellent infrastructure along with experienced and skilled faculty has a great impact on student’s career trajectory. One cannot overlook the significant role of an institution in medical studies.

One needs to have realistic expectations from themselves. Some students keep on preparing for entrance exams without taking into consideration practical situation. If candidates are unable to score for government colleges you can still have a career in medicine by studying at government medical colleges abroad.

Some students don’t want to go abroad due to the duration of course in some colleges being more. In medical profession don’t count the number of years you need to study. Learning in medicine is not 5 years or 5+3+3 years (MBBS+MD+DM) it is a life-long process .Advances in medical sciences keep on occurring rapidly and doctors need to keep themselves updated accordingly.

If you apply to an affordable medical school abroad it will lower down your education cost and make a huge difference in cutting down your study expense. Seeing the world with an open-minded perspective will make you a culturally aware global citizen which will benefit you wherever you go.

Medical aspirants can improve their chances of getting admission at premier medical institutions abroad with the help of good mentors. There are a lot of Universities in Russia, Ukraine, Philippines, Romania, Georgia, etc imparting MBBS abroad in English language. They have been training medical professionals for more than 100 to 200 years and have advance teaching facilities.

You can reach out to admission counselors with all your doubts about studying MBBS abroad. A good abroad education consultant will guide you through the whole admission process. They will l evaluate your options and choose the best study destination to study abroad according to your preference and budget.
