NEET PG 2020 EXAM PATTERN: How to attempt the questions & Subject wise weightage

NEET PG Examination is held for admission to Master of Surgery (MS) and Doctor of Medicine (DM) courses offered in government, private, deemed and central universities. NEET is mandatory even for foreign nationals seeking admission in medical courses in India. NBE will be conducting NEET PG 2020 Exam on January 5, 2020, in computer-based mode.

It is very important to be well acquainted with the NEET PG 2020 Exam pattern before writing the exam to be able to excel the exams and secure good merit. One should understand the subject sections with its marks distribution and the time management required before writing the exam.

The NEET PG 2020 exam contains 3 sections in total (PART A, B &C) and the total number of marks is 300. The duration of the exam is 210 minutes and there is no specified time duration in which each section has to be completed. The candidate can take his own time to complete the sections.

HOW TO ATTEMPT NEET PG 2020 EXAM

With only 210 minutes allocated for attempting 300 questions, the candidate has less than 1 minute to solve each question. There is also negative marking for the wrong answers so the candidate must strategically attempt all the sure questions first.

  1. Go through the whole test in the first 2 hours. Do not try to attempt the questions in order rather try to attempt questions that are easy for you.
  2. If you get stuck at difficult questions first you might waste a lot of time and miss out on the easy ones.
  3. Treat this online exam as you will treat a pen and paper-based exam where you can see all the questions together.
  4. In the next 1 hour “click on Review” and go back to the unattempted questions first. Read the question and options carefully and work your time wisely.
  5. In the last 30 minutes “Click on Review” and go to the “marked and attempted questions”. Go through your choice selection carefully and if you feel that you still need to change the answer to a certain question you have marked, do not hesitate to change it.

HOW TO MARK NEET PG 2020 EXAM QUESTIONS

  1. The official software used in NEET PG 2020 Exam gives an option to “Mark” a question.
  2. After reading the question if you are able to eliminate one or two options take a guess and “Mark” the question for reviewing.
  3. If you are sure about the answer, attempt the question and do not mark it otherwise it will be counted as 0.
  4. If you don’t know the answer at all you can leave the question un-attempted and skip negative marking.

USMLE Step 1 Exam for Foreign Students

United States Medical Licensure Exam (USMLE) is a licensing examination required to practice, do residency and fellowships in the USA. It is divided into three steps and here we will discuss the USMLE Step 1. The USMLE Step 1 is a standardized test that assesses a medical student’s ability to apply basic science fundamentals to the practice of medicine. The test is administered jointly by the National Board of Medical Examiners (NBME) and the Federation of State Medical Boards (FSMB).

When to take USMLE Step 1 Exam

Students take USMLE Step 1 following their second year of medical school but as a foreign medical graduate, your application process for a U.S. medical residency differs slightly from that of a student who completed their education in the United States. Most importantly, before you can apply for a residency in the US, you must get certification from the Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates (ECFMG).

Although you do not need to pass the USMLE Step 1 before taking the USMLE Step 2, you must achieve a passing score on both exams before you become eligible to take the USMLE Step 3. Also, you must pass USMLE Step 1 Step 2, AND Step 3 before your ECFMG certification becomes official.

USMLE Step 1 Application Process

The first step of the ECFMG certification process is filling out an application. Any foreign medical student or graduate can apply, as long as you have earned (or are in the process of earning) a medical degree from a school that is listed in the World Directory of Medical Schools. To start the process, you will need to go to the ECFMG website and request an identification number. From there, you can log in and start filling out the application.

USMLE Step 1 Educational Requirements

You need to have completed at least four years of medical study at one of the medical schools that are listed in the World Directory of Medical Schools, and you need to provide documentation that you have completed all of the necessary credits for graduation. It is important to note that you can apply for ECFMG certification while you are still finishing your degree, but you will not be awarded a certificate until you have received your medical diploma and submitted your final transcripts.

USMLE Step 1 Format

The USMLE Step 1 is a one-day examination, with a total of eight hours. It is divided into 7 blocks, each of which is 60 minutes long. Test takers are allowed 45 total minutes during the test for personal breaks. If you finish any section before the allotted hour is up, you can add that time to your personal break total. Six breaks total are allowed. There is no set number of questions on each block of the test but the USMLE guarantees that there will be no more than 40 questions per block and no more than 280 questions on the exam as a whole.

All of the questions on the USMLE Step 1 are single-item multiple-choice questions. From these options, you must choose the best answer. Only one answer is correct.

USMLE Step 1 Syllabus

USMLE Step 1 covers the basics of medical science. In general, you will be tested on the information that you would learn in the first two years of medical school in the United States. During these years, the training for U.S. medical students consists primarily of didactic coursework and laboratory exercises (as opposed to clinical training).

However, you should be aware that in some countries, the medical training does not align with that of the United States — in terms of timing and/or content — so you need to tailor your study efforts specifically for the USMLE, not necessarily reviewing everything you learned in medical school.

The questions on the USMLE are created by examination committees made up of medical experts from institutions in only two countries: the United States and Canada. These experts include medical school faculty members, teachers, research investigators, and clinicians who come together to decide what it is important for future U.S. medical residents to know about basic medical science.

In general, the USMLE Step 1 covers the broad principles of basic science and the functioning of human organs and organ systems. It includes questions within 8 traditionally defined disciplines and 5 interdisciplinary areas.

The traditionally defined disciplines are:

  • Anatomy
  • Behavioral Sciences
  • Biochemistry
  • Biostatistics and Epidemiology
  • Microbiology
  • Pathology
  • Pharmacology
  • Physiology

The interdisciplinary areas are:

  • Ageing
  • Genetics
  • Immunology
  • Molecular and Cellular biology
  • Nutritional sciences

Along with the ability to know all the information on these subjects you also need to be able to read and interpret relevant graphs and tables, identify pathologic and normal specimens (including both microscopic and pathologic specimens), apply your knowledge to specific clinical problem-solving questions for the USMLE Step 1 Exam.

There is also heavy emphasis on how these topics apply to organ systems. These types of questions normally make up between 60 and 70% of the total content of the test.

Organ systems are covered on the USMLE Step 1 are:

  • Blood and Lymphoreticular System
  • Behavioral Health
  • Cardiovascular System
  • Endocrine System
  • Gastrointestinal System
  • Nervous System and Special Senses
  • Renal and Urinary System
  • Reproductive System (Male and Female)
  • Respiratory System
  • Skin and Subcutaneous Tissue
  • Musculoskeletal System

PG medical students  to serve in district hospitals for a compulsory rotating internship

In the note sent to the Union Health Ministry, it was proposed that all postgraduate students shall undertake a rotation in designated district hospitals/health systems for a period of three months as a part of their course curriculum. In addition to activities at the district hospital, postgraduate students of community medicine may also require to get posted at primary health centres and gain relevant field experience.

As stated by a senior government official “District hospitals represent the backbone of the country’s secondary level public healthcare providing speciality care. These hospitals are closer to people than most medical colleges, and are an overwhelming source of services for the people, rural and urban alike,”

BoG said the District Residency Programme may be coordinated by the Directorate General of Health Services who will also be preparing an annual record for placement of the batch of the postgraduate students. The states with surplus postgraduate student supply may be grouped with supply-deficient states to meet the requisite.

Medical colleges, both government and private, will place their post-graduates in the hands of the government for rotation/posting towards the duration of the course for at least three months. The rotation will be provisionally termed ‘District Residency Program and the postgraduate student undergoing this posting will be termed as ‘District Resident’.

The BoG has written to the Health Ministry to develop guidelines for implementation of the proposal for postgraduate students and establish a partnership with the state governments for the same. It has also sought that this provision comes into force from the next academic session.

“The move is aimed at providing practical experience to future specialists in the real-life setting of the country’s public health system. Also, this will help address the shortage of specialist doctors in district hospitals of rural and remote areas, and help strengthen services at such hospitals,” a senior government official said.
