Life in Guyana

Life in Guyana

Republic of Guyana is a sovereign country located the northern mainland of South America. Guyana is bordered by the Atlantic Ocean to the north, Brazil to the south and southwest, Venezuela to the west, and Suriname to the east.

Guyana encloses a wide variety of landscapes and ecosystems- coastal plains in the north, mountains and highlands covered in rainforests, and Savannah plateaus in the southern region along the Brazilian border.

The country’s exuberant landscape and rich ecosystem provide plenty of outdoor recreations like fishing and hunting. Bird-watching is also among popular activities at Lethem.

Hiking and rafting are great indulges for adrenaline junkies and swimming in freshwater creeks, particularly in the Savannah regions are few relaxing activities to immerse in. There are also numerous waterfalls and mountainous areas with jaw-dropping views for an exceptional experience.

Even though Guyana is geographically situated in South America the majority of features are common with the Caribbean from music to food, to architecture, markets and more. One reason for this may be that Guyana was once a British colony, like many of the Caribbean islands. No other South American countries were ever British colonies and Guyana therefore has a strong British influence and Caribbean culture.

Guyana is a founding member of the CARICOM (Caribbean Community) economic bloc and also the home of the Bloc’s Headquarters.

Language

English is the official and widely spoken language of Guyana and is used for education, government, media, and services. The native language of majority of population is Guyanese Creole, an English-based creole with slight African and East Indian influence but natives are able to communicate in English even in the remotest Amerindian villages. Indo-Guyanese people also speak Hindi.

People

Guyana‘s population (Guyanese people) is mainly made up of ethnic groups: Amerindians, Africans, Indians, Europeans and Chinese. Indo-Guyanese (also known as East Indians) make up 43.5% of the population. The majority of Indo-Guyanese are descended from Bhojpuri-speaking areas of North India and a sizable minority are South Indian, largely of Tamil and Telugu descent.

Religion

57.4% of the population is Christian, 28.4% is Hindu, 7.2% is Muslim, 1.9% adhered to other religions, while 2.3% of the population don’t follow any specific faith. Christmas and Easter are widely celebrated across the country along with Diwali, the festival of light when all households and city streets are decorated with lit-up candles, Phagwah, known in India as Holi, and Eid-ul-Fitr.

Currency

The Guyanese dollar (GYD) is the local currency of Guyana. USD are widely accepted and changed.

Weather

Climate in Guyana is warm and tropical, there is substantial rainfall throughout the year and the humidity is considerably high. Guyana has two rainy seasons, December to January and May to June, while along the coastline the climate is influenced by sea breezes.

Food

Guyana has food to suit everyone’s tastes with a focus on Caribbean, Asian and Latin American recipes that make abundant use of spicy locally grown chiles and fresh tropical fruits and vegetables.

A typical dish is pepperpot, a stew made of meat (usually beef, mutton, or pork), potatoes, and peppers laced with cassareep (a sauce concocted from cassava juice and spices).

Shopping

Arawak and Carib crafts are sold in markets throughout the country. Their brightly colored textiles, paintings, and intricate baskets are also popular exports. Jewelry, gifts, crafts, fabrics, and clothing are some of the great products you can buy in Guyana as souvenirs.

How to reach Guyana

By Flight

There are two international airports:

  • Cheddi Jagan International Airport
  • Timehri and Eugene F. Correira International Airport (formerly Ogle Airport)

The country’s main airport is located about 25 miles (40 km) from capital Georgetown and is served by several international airlines.

Direct international as well as connecting flights are serviced from New York City, Miami, Toronto, Panama City, Panama, Bridgetown, Port of Spain, Paramaribo, Aruba and Curaçao.

Flight duration from Indira Gandhi International Airport to Cheddi Jagan International Airport via John F Kennedy International Airport, United States is 40 hours 10 minutes.

By Road

If travelling via land one can reach Guyana either from Brazil at the Lethem/Bonfim border post or from Suriname, with a ferry ride between Moleson Creek (Guyana) and South Drain (Suriname).

Travelling around

For travelling within Guyana there are minibuses travelling along the coast and between Georgetown and Lethem. But the best way to get around in other parts for most travelers is a combination of chartered 4×4 and planes. Charter flights depart from Ogle Airport in Georgetown.

About Uzbekistan

Bordering Kazakhstan and the Aralkum Desert (former Aral Sea) to the north and northwest, Turkmenistan and Afghanistan to the southwest, Tajikistan to the southeast and Kyrgyzstan to the northeast, Uzbekistan is one of the largest Central Asian states.

Uzbekistan is home to an incredible number of photogenic mosques, mausoleums and madrasas in every shade of blue. As a major key stop on the Silk Road it has been left with a rich cultural and architectural legacy.

The construction of monumental buildings was seen as a matter of prestige, emphasizing the power of the ruling dynasty and leading families. Ceramicists, artists and architects from all over the empire were called by Timur and his descendants to beautify the cities of Khiva, Samarkand and Bukhara. The mosques are adorned with the finest murals and mosaics, with techniques and materials imported mainly from Persia.

Uzbekistan has a rich and diverse natural environment and has the fourth-largest gold deposits in the world.

The cities of Uzbekistan are surprisingly cosmopolitan; Tashkent and Bukhara in particular have a rather European vibe. Lakeside beer gardens, landscaped public parks, and cafes next to most of the main tourist attractions can be easily spotted. Fueled by ice-cream, cold beers and endless pots of green tea, sightseeing in Uzbekistan can be a truly amazing experience.

Language

The official language of Uzbekistan is Uzbek. The majority of citizens speak it as their first language. Due to its history as part of the Soviet Union, many citizens also speak Russian which is a compulsory second language in all schools.

In the cities, more and more people speak English, especially those in the hotel and catering trades. English is still generally not widely spoken among locals.

Clothes

Local ladies love brightly-colored dresses, often with sequins and matching harem trousers although around 90 per cent of Uzbeks are Muslim, but women do not wear the veil and enjoy better gender equality and freedom.

Shopping

Uzbekistan is a shopper’s paradise. You will find beautiful rugs, silk, spices, handicrafts and traditional clothes in the Eski Djouva and Chor Su bazaars in the Old City of Tashkent. You can pick up handmade ceramics, needlework, silk cloth and miniaturist paintings in most madrassas, which have largely been transformed into bazaars.

Food

Uzbekistan is known for its super-sweet, fresh watermelons, and achichuk salad, consisting of thin, long-sliced tomato, red onion and cucumber. This is served with plov, the national dish – rice cooked in a huge pot and tarted up with veg, quail eggs and slices of meat.

Hearty meat grills are popular too, alongside tear-and-share bread and samsa, a teardrop-shaped street food that’s a cross between a samosa and a Cornish pasty, filled with anything from beef to lamb to potato.

People

Uzbeks comprise a majority (80%) of the total population. Other ethnic groups include Russians 2%, Tajiks 5%, Kazakhs 3%, Karakalpaks 2.5% and Tatars 1.5%. The nation is 88% Muslim, 9% Eastern Orthodox and 3% other faiths.

Currency

The currency of the country is the Uzbekistani som. ATMs can be easily found in larger cities (Tashkent, Samarkand, Bukhara, Termez and Nukus). Visa is a better option than Master Card as ATMs that accept MasterCard are few. Uzbekistan is cheaper than its neighbour Kazakhstan.

Travelling to Uzbekistan

By Flight

The main airport of Uzbekistan is the Tashkent International Airport. The airport is reasonably modern and has various international carriers operating and the national Uzbekistan Airways flying from here.

You can travel to Uzbekistan from India via regular direct flights which take around 3 hrs.

Domestic airports are in Andijan, Bukhara, Ferghana, Karshi, Namangan, Nukus, Samarkand, Tashkent, Termez and Urgench.

Getting around

All of Uzbekistan’s main cities are served by low-cost domestic flights, great road links and high-speed trains. You’ll find shared taxis and bus services in all the cities, plus Tashkent has metro facilities with some exceptionally ornate stations.

By train

The most comfortable way to travel between the major tourist cities in Uzbekistan is by train. The main line Tashkent – Samarkand – Bukhara is served once a day in each direction by two express trains. Daily overnight train to and from Tashkent to Bukhara are also available comfortable sleeping cars allow a good sleep.

Metro

During the day the metro (underground train) is a good option. After midnight you should use taxi services. It is better to book the taxi (car-service) to pick you up in advance.

बाँग्लादेश से करें MBBS की पढाई

Many international students choose Bangladesh for higher education because high quality education comes at reasonable costs here compared to education in American or European universities which sometimes get too expensive to afford.

The living cost in Bangladesh is way cheaper than any other country across the world offering similar living conditions as in India. Bangladesh is geographically close to India and Indian parents prefer Bangladesh for their children’s higher studies, since it is close to home.

Foreign students are always overwhelmed by the hospitality and friendliness of Bangladeshis. Currently, there are around 3,000 foreign students studying in different public and private universities of Bangladesh, including medical and engineering institutes. Most of them are from the SAARC countries and some other Asian nations.

Bangladesh is a Muslim majority country and many foreign students coming from Muslim countries and communities find Bangladesh’s culture and traditions very familiar to theirs. The communal festivals and religious harmony in the country serves as an attraction for them.

The MBBS in Bangladesh  is recognized by WHO and UNESCO and is accepted globally. The colleges are approved by the Medical Council of India (MCI) and after graduation the students are eligible for all the licensure examinations like USLME, PLAB, NEXT, NZREX, etc.

No entrance test is required for admission which makes the admission process much easier. No donation or capitation stipulated to get admission in Bangladesh.

The pattern of MBBS in Bangladesh  is similar to that of India in terms of syllabus, books, teaching methods, and duration of study. Same Indian Author Books and Journal followed and the language of instruction for MBBS in Bangladesh  is English.

There is an enormous scope of practical knowledge in the university hospitals. Due to high population density you can treat real patients in Outpatient clinic (OPD) and the diseases encountered and treatment procedure is similar to India.
