HOW TO CULTIVATE SUCCESSFUL STUDY HABITS

One way to increase the likelihood of success in your educational pursuits is to consciously maintain productive and intentional learning habits. Everybody has some rooted habits; some are good and others are not. While it’s still dubious as to how long it takes to break a bad habit or instil a positive one; one thing is certain that cultivating productive study habits is essential to succeed scholastically.

Active learning approach

The best way to approach learning is to take it on as an active process. You need to ask questions, make methodological connections to the material, and review information for retaining it for long term. In a learning environment, the best learning habits for students are to be good listeners and active participants. There is much to be learned from professors and peers, and students need to develop the skill of asking challenging questions to both professors and peers. A well-read and prepared student is paramount.

Always come prepared

Complete your assigned readings and chapters before class so you have an idea of what to expect. This way you will know what you can’t understand and clear your doubts in the class itself. While taking notes focus on the important and main points of the topic. Also, form study groups and regularly discuss the topics you are studying.

Be a Critical learner

It is important to be a critical learner. When you read course material or are involved in any part of the learning process in the course reflect on the material from your own perspective.

Stay focused

While learning, it’s important to be productive and focused. Focus on scheduling daily tasks in a to-do list beforehand. Break down topics into time slots and make sure to finish them in schedule slot. This will help you feel rewarded and boost your motivation forward.

Quit passive learning

Never sit in the back of class thinking that you can passively learn. Through study groups, you can debate course topics. When someone challenges your opinion or what you held to be true, you are able to better apply the knowledge to defend that. A knowledge that stems from research ends up being your strength and helps to cement that information in your mind. If you can’t do that, taking good notes and practising what you learned help.

Establish a relatable connection

Given the amount of information one has to learn, memorization is inevitable. However, memorization is easier if the student can find a way to apply or relate to the information. Elaborating on and relating to the information will make the information much easier to understand and memorise for a longer duration.

Self-care

It’s easy to get focused on memorizing the material and completing syllabus, which is important. But unless you eat and sleep well, and have some time for enjoyment and stepping away, it will be difficult to endure the academic and clinical journey.
