Ministry has proposed NEXT as a centralised examination and discard NEET-PG

Every year 1.5 lakh students appear for NEET-PG entrance exams for admission to around 50,000 PG Medical seats in India.

In a welcome move by Union Health Ministry to relieve medical students wanting to pursue post-graduate courses the Ministry has proposed NEXT as a centralised examination and discard NEET-PG.

“According to the amendments proposed in NMC Bill, entry into the PG programs will be on the basis of the results of the National Exit Test (NEXT), which would be held as a common final MBBS examination exam across the country. So, the candidates would not have to appear in a separate exam after clearing the MBBS final exam for admission to PG courses.

The final MBBS examination i.e. NEXT results would be prerequisite for admission to MD and MS programs and the students would also not be required to appear in a separate exam after MBBS to obtain a license to practice.

The NMC Bill was introduced in Parliament in December 2017, but it lapsed with the dissolution of the 16th Lok Sabha. The Bill proposed a national-level licence exam for all MBBS graduates India and Abroad for getting licence to practice in India and  provision of a ‘bridge course’ to allow practitioners of AYUSH courses to pursue allopath to address the “acute shortage” of doctors in the country. But it was removed due to strong protests by several doctor bodies.

The new amendment has been incorporated in the revised draft National Medical Commission (NMC) Bill which would be sent to the Cabinet soon, according to official sources.

However, for admission to PG courses at AIIMS, clearing a separate exam will remain mandatory. Also, the NEET Super Specialty, which is a national-level entrance exam for admission in DM/MCh courses, will continue, sources said.

This will regulate NEXT as a centralised examination that will regulate as MBBS UG level Exit examination and PG level medical courses entrance examination as well.

MCI to Introduce Common NEXT Exam for Indian and Foreign Medical Graduates and Candidates of PG Med

PG Medical degrees from Russia, other countries soon to be recognised by MCI in India

Union Cabinet has approved certain amendments to National Medical Commission (NMC) Bill considering recommendations of Department Related Parliamentary Standing Committee (DRPSC) and general feedback from public.

The NMC Bill seeks to replace the Medical Council of India with National Medical Commission as top regulator of medical education in India. It aims to move towards outcome-based regulation of medical education rather than process oriented. It will ensure proper separation of functions within regulator by having autonomous boards, create accountable and transparent procedures for maintaining standards in Medical Education.

The final MBBS examination will be held as common exam throughout country. It will serve as exit test to be called National Exit Test (NEXT). It will ease burden on medical students as they will not have to appear in separate exam after MBBS to get license to practice. NEXT will also serve as screening test for doctors with foreign medical qualifications in order to practice in India.

It removes provision dealing with bridge course for AYUSH practitioners to practice modern medicine to limited extent. Now state governments have been empowered to take necessary measures for addressing and promoting primary health care in rural areas.
