Indian Ocean Medical Institute Trust (IOMIT) was established in 1996 with the vision to promote the education and learning in Mauritius by founding a world-class Medical College in name of the late Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam (SSR) revered as the Father of the Nation in Mauritius. Mr R.P.N.Singh, an educationist and social planner from India is the Founder Chairman and Managing Trustee of the Trust for Life.
Being the first medical college in Mauritius Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam (SSR) medical college has been established according to international standards to serve as an emerging ‘Knowledge Hub’ and centre of medical education in the Indian Ocean Rim region. SSR Medical College follows active learning system through-group sessions, problem-solving sessions, journal discussions, debates, video conferencing sessions and presentations.
The faculty of the Seewoosagur Ramgoolam (SSR) medical college has been recruited among Graduates of Premier Institutions and working at the most reputed institutions like Oxford, the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) Delhi, PGIs, Armed Forces Medical College, Pune, JIPMER, Pondicherry, St. John’s Medical College, Bangalore, University of Hong Kong and many other reputed institutions.
SSR medical college is situated almost in the middle of Mauritius near the central town of Curepipe about 15 km from the airport and the same distance from the Capital city of Port Louis.
The College is spread over about 30 acres of land provided by the government. The campus is built up covering an area of about 175,000 square feet (16,300 m2) by academic buildings. These Educational buildings house the pre-clinical and the para-clinical departments of the college. The Ministry of Health and Quality of life has further extended its support to the College by providing more than 2000 beds for the clinical training of the students of the SSR Medical College at Jawaharlal Lal Nehru Hospital, Victoria, SSR and other speciality hospitals.
SSR Medical College has air-conditioned Lecture Theaters, large Lecture Hall, Examination Hall along with many Labs cum Demonstration Rooms and State of the Art “Clinical Skills Laboratory” with teaching aids imported from Japan, for simulated training. It has more than a dozen seminar halls, tutorial rooms for small group teaching and a 5000 sq ft Dissection Hall with teaching aids from Germany.
SSR Medical College has been successfully producing world-class medical graduates for the last 20 years, more than hundreds of MBBS graduates of the SSR College are already practising medicine in most reputed hospitals like Mt Sinai, Johns Hopkins’s USA/ UK/ France and in many other developed countries.
The curriculum of the SSR Medical College is based on the latest guidelines of the Medical Council of India with additional Information Technology syllabus like the General Medical Council of U.K. The MBBS course, infrastructure and the facilities have been set up keeping in view the requirements of the Medical Councils. The international quality is ensured by an International Advisory Committee (IAC), which visits the college at regular intervals to counsel about Academic matters as per international standards.
The MBBS course is of 5 years duration, the Indian Students undertake the internship at various hospitals of their choice in India such as Safdarjung Hospital, New Delhi, Ram Manohar Lohia, Delhi, St. Stephens, Delhi, ESI, Basaidarapur, Delhi, Sir Gangaram Hospital, Delhi, Deen Dayal Upadhayay, Delhi, KEM, Mumbai, Govt. SHMS Hospital Srinagar, Civil Hospital, Chandigarh, Govt. Medical College & Rajendra Hospital, Patiala, Sardar Patel Medical College, Bikaner. SSR Medical College has the 100% passing rate in the very first attempt at the MCI Screening Test conducted by the “National Board of Examination”, Govt. of India.

The College is affiliated to the University of Mauritius, which is the degree-awarding body. The College is approved by the Tertiary Education Commission (TEC), Mauritius and the MBBS degree awarded is recognised by the Medical Council of Mauritius. The MBBS degree awarded is recognised by the Medical Council of India, Medical Board of California, the USA and almost all other countries of the world. SSR Medical College has also been recognised for listing in the IMED/ECFMG, USA and World Health Organisation (WHO).
