The NEET (National Eligibility cum Entrance Test) is a major exam for aspiring medical students in India.

Here’s what generally happens next and what you should be focusing on:

1. Results Declaration

The NEET 2025 results were declared on June 14, 2025. You can download your scorecard from the official NTA (National Testing Agency) website using your application number and date of birth. Your scorecard will contain crucial information like your total marks, All India Rank (AIR), and category rank.

2. Understanding Your Score and Rank

Once you have your results, it’s important to understand what they mean. Your All India Rank (AIR) is the most critical factor for admissions. The cut-off scores for different categories (General, SC, ST, OBC, PWD) and for various colleges (government, private, deemed universities) will determine your eligibility for counselling.

3. NEET Counselling Process

This is the most important step for securing a seat in a medical college. The Medical Counselling Committee (MCC) conducts centralized online counselling for:

  • 15% All India Quota (AIQ) seats in government medical colleges across India.
  • Seats in Deemed Universities, Central Universities, AIIMS, and JIPMER institutes.

Separately, state counselling authorities conduct counselling for the remaining 85% of state quota seats in government colleges and 100% of seats in private colleges within their respective states.

The counselling process typically involves:

  • Registration: You’ll need to register online on the MCC portal (for AIQ) or the respective state counselling portals. This usually involves paying a non-refundable registration fee and a refundable security deposit.
  • Choice Filling: This is where you list your preferred colleges and courses (MBBS, BDS, etc.) in order of priority. Researching colleges and their previous year’s cut-offs can be very helpful here.
  • Choice Locking: After filling your choices, you’ll need to lock them within a specific timeframe. Once locked, choices cannot be modified.
  • Seat Allotment: Based on your rank and choices, seats are allotted.
  • Reporting to the Allotted College: If you are satisfied with the allotted seat, you’ll need to report to the college within the given deadline for document verification and admission formalities. You also have options to “free exit” (in Round 1) or opt for an “upgrade” to a better seat in subsequent rounds.

The counselling process generally has multiple rounds (Round 1, Round 2, Mop-up Round, and Stray Vacancy Round).

4. Exploring Other Career Options After NEET

Even if you don’t get an MBBS seat or are interested in other healthcare fields, NEET opens doors to a wide range of rewarding professions. Some popular options include:

  • BDS (Bachelor of Dental Surgery): Focuses on dental health and surgery.
  • AYUSH Courses:
    • BAMS (Bachelor of Ayurvedic Medicine and Surgery): Traditional Indian medicine.
    • BHMS (Bachelor of Homeopathic Medicine and Surgery): Homeopathic healing methods.
    • BUMS (Bachelor of Unani Medicine and Surgery): Traditional Greek and Arab medicine.
    • BSMS (Bachelor of Siddha Medicine and Surgery): Traditional Tamil medicine.
  • B.V.Sc & AH (Bachelor of Veterinary Science and Animal Husbandry): For those interested in animal healthcare.
  • B.Sc Nursing: A crucial role in patient care and healthcare management.
  • BPT (Bachelor of Physiotherapy): Focuses on physical rehabilitation.
  • Allied Health Sciences:
    • B.Sc. in Medical Lab Technology (MLT)
    • B.Sc. in Radiology & Imaging Technology
    • B.Sc. in Operation Theatre Technology (OTT)
    • B.Sc. in Nutrition and Dietetics
    • Bachelor of Occupational Therapy (BOT)
