Established in 1974, Medical University – Pleven is one of the five medical Universities in Bulgaria. It is recognized by the National Evaluation and Accreditation Agency, Bulgaria and the Medical Council of India (MCI).
It incorporates educational and therapeutic facilities at the contemporary pre-clinical base, University Hospital with more than 1000 beds and clinics in all major medical fields, as well as a large number of specialized clinics and research units with modern diagnostic and therapeutic equipment. All students have the opportunity to be in direct contact with patients, participate in clinical rounds and consultations.
More than 6000 Bulgarian students along with international students from over 30 countries have graduated from the Medical University – Pleven. At present, 2044 students from the country and 519 international students (from India, Sri Lanka, Turkey, EU countries, the US, Canada, Israel, Germany, Nigeria, Iraq, Australia, Central America, etc.)are studying Medicine in English-medium course at the University.
The Medical University of Pleven is a reputable and accredited institution, listed in all known directories of internationally renowned medical schools in the EEA. The educational process is carried out at 24 departments of the University of Medicine Pleven by more than 60 Professors and 300 Assistant Professors. Most of them are members of national and international scientific and medical societies and authors of research studies.
Various contemporary methods of teaching are applied in the academic process including theoretical lectures, small group practical tutorials and seminars. Students are free to join extracurricular academic courses and scientific circles at the departments.
The university follows the uniform European Union syllabus and is part of BOLOGNA process and ERASMUS+ programs. It even follows European Credit Transfer system which makes it possible for students to transfer to other universities or cities during the course, which is part of the European Universities Network.

ACADEMIC CURRICULUM AT UNIVERSITY OF MEDICINE PLEVEN
- The first two years of pre-clinical studies emphasise heavily on the fundamental subjects; Anatomy, Physiology, Histology, Microbiology, Pharmacology, Biochemistry and Biophysics.
- The next three years are clinical with a focus on surgery and preventative medicine with more of an emphasis on practical work and visiting patients in hospitals and clinics.
- The last year is the state clinical practise or internship.
