Curriculum at Institute of Medicine Nepal


The curriculum program of studying MBBS in Nepal at Institute of Medicine is community oriented, has joint teaching learning campaigns and encourages self-reliant and problem-based training. Faculty members organize regular intra and inter departmental meetings in order to conduct associated seminars and effective learning.

The MBBS at Institute of Medicine has been divided into three parts-

The first phase comprises of two years duration, in the following areas:

Ist year:

  • Community Medicine and Integrated Basic Medical Science
  • Clinical exposure
  • Communication Skills

IInd year:

  • Integrated Basic Medical Science and Clinical exposure
  • Communication Skills

Exposure to patients with training in communication skills, history taking and general physical examination included in this phase.

The second phase comprises of one year duration, in the following areas:

  • Disciplines of Forensic Medicine
  • Community Medicine (Applied Epidemiology, Family Health Exercise)
  • Internal Medicine
  • Surgery
  • Gynaecology and Obstetrics
  • Paediatrics

The third phase comprises of one and a half years duration, mainly concentrated on the clinical subjects:

  • Internal Medicine
  • Surgery
  • Gynaecology and Obstetrics
  • Paediatrics,
  • Eye,
  • ENT,
  • Orthopaedics,
  • Dentistry,
  • Psychiatry,
  • Dermatology,
  • Radiology,
  • Anaesthesiology
  • Accident and Emergency Medicine,
  • Community Medicine (District health service management)

Clinical Rotation in major clinical areas, Information Technology, Ethics and Research will be covered during this phase.

Internship at Institute of Medicine:

  • On successful completion of the course of study of four and a half years, it is mandatory to complete one year of compulsory rotating internship before finally graduating and becoming eligible to practice as a physician.
  • The students are posted in Internal Medicine, General Surgery, Orthopaedics, Paediatrics, Gynaecology & Obstetrics, Anaesthesia, Accident and Emergency Medicine, Eye and ENT.
  • This programme is conducted in different departments of designated Teaching Hospitals.
