Danylo Halytsky Lviv National Medical University is one of the oldest and elite medical educational institutions in Ukraine having IVth level of accreditation.
Established on November 16 1784, the Medical Faculty of Lviv National Medical University started its functioning under the privilege of the Austrian emperor Josef II.
From the year 1961 University has started providing medical education to foreign citizens. Since 1997 Lviv National Medical University is teaching foreign students in the English language and the number of students is rapidly developing.
In the course of 58 years, Lviv National Medical University has trained over 2 thousand doctors and 5 thousand pharmacists from countries like the USA, UK, Canada, Germany, Poland, Bulgaria, India, Syria, Jordan, Saudi Arabia and others.

On October 21, 2003, according to the decree of the President of Ukraine the University was conferred recognition as a National university due to its great contributions to the development of national education and science.

Lviv National Medical University is a part of the Bologna Process [agreement between European countries designed to ensure comparability of the standards and quality of higher education qualifications] which ensures a high quality of education and an internationally recognized degree.
Clinical departments of Lviv National Medical University have more than 10000 beds, 41 affiliated hospitals, 9 polyclinic departments with 3510 attendances during shift, University dental medical centre for more than 2000 attendances during shift.
The number of students annually is more than 19000 persons, which includes 5426 undergraduate students (out of them 1000 foreign students), 62 students of Preparatory Course, more than 1500 internship doctors, 50 students of Master’s program, 70 students of PhD program, 70 Postgraduate doctors, around 11000 students of Faculty of Postgraduate training, 312 students of Medical College.
At 78 University departments, at the Institute of Clinical Pathology, in the Central Research Laboratory (CRL) and Laboratory of industrial toxicology, there are working 1211 scientists. The scientists comprise 134 Doctor of Sciences and more than 620 PhD degree holders, including 113 full professors, 369 associate professors, 50 senior tutors, 662 assistant professors, 17 researchers.
Among them, there are 23 Members, 7 Corresponding Members of Academy of Sciences, 12 Honored Workers of Science and Technology, 7 Honored Workers of Education, 19 Honored Doctors, 1 Honored Worker of Physical Culture and Sport, 8 Laureates of the State Prize of Ukraine in Science and Technology.
