NEET UG 2020: Single Entrance Exam for All India UG Medical Admissions

As proffered in the act, under the new National Medical Commission, medical aspirants will be taking a uniform entrance exam across the country from next academic year for UG admissions in medical colleges across India.

Until now, Institutes of National Importance (INI), AIIMS and JIPMER Puducherry governed by a separate Act of Parliament, were eligible to conduct their separate national-level entrance examination for the courses they offer.

As told by Health Minister Harsh Vardhan, “efforts are underway to constitute the National Medical Commission under the NMC Act at the earliest so that some major reforms can be implemented from the academic year 2020-21. A common NEET (UG) examination for entry into all medical colleges and also AIIMS, JIPMER, etc, will be implemented from 2020”.

A uniform exam will benefit students to appear for a single exam and single counselling window for all India admission, saving a lot of time and efforts. The exam pattern, questions, subject sections, etc changes are yet to be updated and will be a major factor for the students to strategise while preparing for the entrance exam.

The NMC also has a provision for conducting a single exam, National Exit Test (NEXT), that will act as the common final year MBBS exam, licentiate exam to practice medicine, criteria for admission to postgraduate (PG) medical courses, and screening test for foreign medical graduates wanting to work or study in India. According to the NMC Act, the NEXT results might also be used as a criterion to rank medical colleges in the country.
