MCI to Introduce Common NEXT Exam for Indian and Foreign Medical Graduates and Candidates of PG Med

Foreign medical graduates will soon no longer not need to go through the standalone Foreign Medical Graduates test to practice medicine in India after completing MBBS abroad .The National Board of Examination conducts the Foreign Medical Graduate (FMG) Test twice annually for  candidates who have studied medicine abroad and want to practice in India.

In a major reform proposed to be brought upon by the Ministry of Health is to merge the FMG exam with the National Exit Test (NEXT) intended to assess the standard of the Indian medical pass-outs in the final year of the MBBS course.

The final draft Bill is also expected to propose NEXT to become an examination equivalent to NEET-PG for postgraduate medical courses across India. This will regulate NEXT as an exit examination in which the Indian graduates and foreign graduates are tested against the same yardstick and a uniform standard of quality of practicing doctors is ensured.

Experts believe that FMGT was a hurdle erected by private medical colleges to discourage students from taking admissions abroad at lower cost and lure them into taking admissions in management seats at much higher fees. But with the inculcation of a common examination platform with NEXT all the medical graduates from India and abroad will get a fair chance at being a qualified Doctor.

According to the sources, MCI has stated that the exam will be conducted every year in July. The Exam will be of 300 marks, out of which 127 will be passing marks and students from foreign medical colleges must secure minimum 150 marks.

Students studied from medical colleges abroad who score between 127 and 150 will have to undergo six-month internship in rural areas and students who score above 245 can apply for NEET PG without appearing in the test.
