Impact of the delay in NEET-UG 2020 & JEE 2020 Exams on college academic calendar

With the NEET UG 2020 & JEE examination being postponed yet again due to the unprecedented increase in COVID cases and no other viable option visible to conduct the National level exams for lacs of aspirants; the next practical move is to identify the impact of these undesirable delays on the academic calendar of the colleges and come up with ways to minimise the untoward implications of these delays in exams.

Around 9 lakh aspirants have registered for the JEE (Main) exams and 16 lakhs aspirants have registered for the NEET-UG exams this year. In normal situations these exams every year are conducted in the month of April and May. The results are declared in June followed by counselling and admission process sessions completed by end of July for engineering and August for medical aspirants. The classes then commence from August and September respectively for both exams.

With the rise in concern over the worsening circumstances of the pandemic, candidates and parents have been demanding the postponement of the exams. The aspirants of NEET & JEE prepare for these exams for years but the constant delay is making the students more concern about their preparations and less enthusiastic about taking the actual exam.

Coronavirus pandemic has had a very crippling impact on the academic schedule this year and has derailed almost all important examinations in the country. The Xth and XIIth board examinations were affected with many papers left in a lurch, in turn, delaying almost all the board results. With the safety of students being the utmost importance all competitive examinations are being delayed and affecting the admissions to undergraduate courses.

With NEET-UG 2020 examination on September 13, even if fast-tracked the results will be released by September 30 and the whole month of October will be consumed for counselling. The semester will most likely begin from November across all Medical and Dental Colleges in the country.

Delay in conducting the entrance exam directly leads to a delay in admission processes and the beginning of the semesters. If the semesters begin late the students will have very less time to complete the first-semester syllabus and the curriculum had to be adjusted to accommodate with the time constraint.

The authorities have time and again reiterated that academic calendar and schedule is important, but the safety and well being of every citizen including students is an equally imperative concern.

Authorities and conducting bodies are also concerned about the safety of the students above all and want to ensure proper safety measures are taken before conducting any exam. They appointed a committee of experts to assess the situation and submit their recommendations regarding the feasibility of conducting these national level exams.

Everybody is hopeful that as the situation gets better all the working of the country will return to normal seamlessly. Depending upon the prevailing conditions the decisions might be reformed but every resolve will be in the best interest of the country and the citizens as a whole.

Students and parents should not worry and be best prepared on their part for the NEET & JEE Examination to welcome the decisions as they come. The impact of the pandemic is universal wherein not much can be done on an individual basis.

NEET-SS 2020 Entrance Exam Postponed not to be conducted in July/August

Through a recent notice published on the official website on 15th May 2020, Joint Director (Medical) Department of Examinations, National Board of Examinations (NBE), Dr. Vinay Gupta has informed that the National Eligibility Cum Entrance Test (NEET-SS 2020) for admission to Super Speciality Courses for the July session is unlikely to be conducted in July/August 2020.

The NEET-SS is conducted by NBE as per the schedule of admissions notified in Post Graduate Medical Education Regulations (PGMER), 2000 as a single eligibility-cum-ranking entrance examination for admission to various DM/MCh courses. No other entrance examination, either at the state or the Institution level, is valid for entry to DM/MCh courses as per the Indian Medical Council (Amendment) Act, 2016 w.e.f. 2017 admission session. Qualifying NEET-SS is a compulsory requirement for entry to DM/MCh courses at various Universities/ Institutions across the country.

In view of the Covid-19 pandemic and the lockdown imposed to curb its spread, the exit examinations of MD, MS and DNB Broad Specialty candidates have been deferred across the country. Therefore, the final examination results are also unlikely to be declared by July 15, 2020, which is the cut-off date as per the existing regulations to qualify MD, MS and DNB Broad Specialty exit exam for being able to appear for NEET SS of the respective admission year.

Due to these unforeseen circumstances, the conduction of exam in July/August can not be undertaken and the revised schedule for NEET-SS 2020 shall be published on the official website in due time.
