HOW TO CULTIVATE SUCCESSFUL STUDY HABITS

One way to increase the likelihood of success in your educational pursuits is to consciously maintain productive and intentional learning habits. Everybody has some rooted habits; some are good and others are not. While it’s still dubious as to how long it takes to break a bad habit or instil a positive one; one thing is certain that cultivating productive study habits is essential to succeed scholastically.

Active learning approach

The best way to approach learning is to take it on as an active process. You need to ask questions, make methodological connections to the material, and review information for retaining it for long term. In a learning environment, the best learning habits for students are to be good listeners and active participants. There is much to be learned from professors and peers, and students need to develop the skill of asking challenging questions to both professors and peers. A well-read and prepared student is paramount.

Always come prepared

Complete your assigned readings and chapters before class so you have an idea of what to expect. This way you will know what you can’t understand and clear your doubts in the class itself. While taking notes focus on the important and main points of the topic. Also, form study groups and regularly discuss the topics you are studying.

Be a Critical learner

It is important to be a critical learner. When you read course material or are involved in any part of the learning process in the course reflect on the material from your own perspective.

Stay focused

While learning, it’s important to be productive and focused. Focus on scheduling daily tasks in a to-do list beforehand. Break down topics into time slots and make sure to finish them in schedule slot. This will help you feel rewarded and boost your motivation forward.

Quit passive learning

Never sit in the back of class thinking that you can passively learn. Through study groups, you can debate course topics. When someone challenges your opinion or what you held to be true, you are able to better apply the knowledge to defend that. A knowledge that stems from research ends up being your strength and helps to cement that information in your mind. If you can’t do that, taking good notes and practising what you learned help.

Establish a relatable connection

Given the amount of information one has to learn, memorization is inevitable. However, memorization is easier if the student can find a way to apply or relate to the information. Elaborating on and relating to the information will make the information much easier to understand and memorise for a longer duration.

Self-care

It’s easy to get focused on memorizing the material and completing syllabus, which is important. But unless you eat and sleep well, and have some time for enjoyment and stepping away, it will be difficult to endure the academic and clinical journey.

PG medical students  to serve in district hospitals for a compulsory rotating internship

In the note sent to the Union Health Ministry, it was proposed that all postgraduate students shall undertake a rotation in designated district hospitals/health systems for a period of three months as a part of their course curriculum. In addition to activities at the district hospital, postgraduate students of community medicine may also require to get posted at primary health centres and gain relevant field experience.

As stated by a senior government official “District hospitals represent the backbone of the country’s secondary level public healthcare providing speciality care. These hospitals are closer to people than most medical colleges, and are an overwhelming source of services for the people, rural and urban alike,”

BoG said the District Residency Programme may be coordinated by the Directorate General of Health Services who will also be preparing an annual record for placement of the batch of the postgraduate students. The states with surplus postgraduate student supply may be grouped with supply-deficient states to meet the requisite.

Medical colleges, both government and private, will place their post-graduates in the hands of the government for rotation/posting towards the duration of the course for at least three months. The rotation will be provisionally termed ‘District Residency Program and the postgraduate student undergoing this posting will be termed as ‘District Resident’.

The BoG has written to the Health Ministry to develop guidelines for implementation of the proposal for postgraduate students and establish a partnership with the state governments for the same. It has also sought that this provision comes into force from the next academic session.

“The move is aimed at providing practical experience to future specialists in the real-life setting of the country’s public health system. Also, this will help address the shortage of specialist doctors in district hospitals of rural and remote areas, and help strengthen services at such hospitals,” a senior government official said.

As proffered in the act, under the new National Medical Commission, medical aspirants will be taking a uniform entrance exam across the country from next academic year for UG admissions in medical colleges across India.

Until now, Institutes of National Importance (INI), AIIMS and JIPMER Puducherry governed by a separate Act of Parliament, were eligible to conduct their separate national-level entrance examination for the courses they offer.

As told by Health Minister Harsh Vardhan, “efforts are underway to constitute the National Medical Commission under the NMC Act at the earliest so that some major reforms can be implemented from the academic year 2020-21. A common NEET (UG) examination for entry into all medical colleges and also AIIMS, JIPMER, etc, will be implemented from 2020”.

A uniform exam will benefit students to appear for a single exam and single counselling window for all India admission, saving a lot of time and efforts. The exam pattern, questions, subject sections, etc changes are yet to be updated and will be a major factor for the students to strategise while preparing for the entrance exam.

The NMC also has a provision for conducting a single exam, National Exit Test (NEXT), that will act as the common final year MBBS exam, licentiate exam to practice medicine, criteria for admission to postgraduate (PG) medical courses, and screening test for foreign medical graduates wanting to work or study in India. According to the NMC Act, the NEXT results might also be used as a criterion to rank medical colleges in the country.
